Andre Leon Talley: A Second Set with Janelle Monae

At the end of a long, glorious Fashion Week, I rolled up in a new, white 2011 Jaguar XJ, loaned to me by a close friend, to see Janelle Monáe’s concert Saturday night at Terminal 5 in midtown Manhattan. I first met her when I hosted her performance in the window of Ralph Lauren’s SoHo store on Fashion’s Night Out. On that night she wore a cream jacket with black stripes, black satin pants, cravat and diamonds, and a black satin top hat and veil, from the designer’s memorable ascot‑and‑derby Spring 2008 show in Central Park to celebrate his 40 years in business.
