Jaguar Land Rover North America and Children's Health Fund Ensure that Vision Problems Don't Stand in the Way of Success in the Classroom
27 January 2015
As part of Jaguar Land Rover North America's corporate sponsorship of Children’s Health Fund’s ‘Healthy and Ready to Learn initiative’, JLRNA employees distributed over 250 pairs of eyeglasses to about 130 students at PS 49 in the South Bronx on Friday, January 23.
Through the ‘Healthy and Ready to Learn ’ initiative, Children’s Health Fund held eye screenings at PS 49 late last year, and identified that 22 percent of students were suffering from undiagnosed vision problems. These students are now coming back to school for the second half of the year with a new outlook – and two new pairs of eyeglasses, one to take home and one to leave at school. JLRNA employees were on‑hand at PS 49 to help distribute eyeglasses and review handouts on eyeglass care with students, as they waited to have their eyeglasses fitted by a licensed optometrist.
“For some students, this is their first pair of eyeglasses and it’s truly a great moment when we see their eyes light up after putting them on for the first time. It’s as if they are seeing the whole world in a brand new way for the very first time, and we are thrilled that Jaguar Land Rover North America employees could join us today,” Karen Redlener Children’s Health Fund Executive Director said.
Dedicated to the premise that all children must be healthy before they enter the classroom in order to succeed in school and in the future, CHF’s ‘Healthy and Ready to Learn’ initiative identifies health barriers to learning and makes strategic changes in the schools in order to give all kids a chance. With the support of a corporate social responsibility grant from Jaguar Land Rover North America, CHF is also testing and providing support to school children to address needs in the areas of behavioral health, asthma, dental pain, hearing and more.
